As President of Rhode Island Council 94, AFSCME, AFL-CIO, I personally welcome you to our union family.
I have worked at the University of Rhode Island for the past twenty-five years and have always been active
in my local union. I have held the position of President of Local 528, representing the university employees
for over nineteen years.
Working in a union environment is much more satisfying than working for a non-union employer.
You have guarantees and rights that are protected by your collective bargaining agreement and state statutes.
You will find your work experience to be challenging and somewhat enjoyable once you settle into your job.
You will have a voice in your future as a union member. It is very important for you to participate
in your local union activities and monthly meetings.
The union's strength is derived from the members. The more that members participate will mean - that the Union
is stronger.
I wish you the best of luck and look forward to meeting you in the near future.
In Solidarity,
J. Michael Downey
